Sikkim goodly Region, or Shikim, Shikimpati or Sikkim, Lepcha, Mayel Lyang, Limbu, Yuksom, one of the fortified place, Standard Tibetan, Bras Ljongs, Denzong or Demojongs) is a landlocked Indian state nestled in the Himalayan mountains. Later, Sikkim became a British protectorate, before merging with India following a referendum in 1975. A hospitable population that's predominantly Buddhist, many fine old monasteries rich with frescoes, religious paintings on silk and statues of the Buddha’s various incarnations make it a soothing place to be in. The state borders Nepal to the west, China Tibet Autonomous Region to the north and east and Bhutan to the southeast, while the state of west Bengal lies to the south. According to legend, the Buddhist saint Guru Rinpoche visited Sikkim in the 9th century, introduced Buddhism and foretold the era of the monarchy. Indeed, the Namgyal dynasty was established in 1642.
